Let’s Talk Safety

#3 Speaking up about hazards

Think about it

  • Someone speaking up can make a difference between life and death.
  • By staying silent, the hazardous conditions or situations may continue, and someone could get injured or killed.
  • It’s entirely possible that your observations and conclusions are shared by others, but they are unwilling to speak up. When you do so first, you may give them confidence to voice their concerns and opinions.

Talk about it

  • The team is getting ready to leave after a long day. Everyone washes their hands at the basin, water spills onto the floor but everyone is exhausted and leaves. You immediately clean up the spill to avoid anyone slipping and falling. How do you address the concern with your colleagues the next day?

Act on it

  • When everyone speaks up about hazards in the workplace, we are reinforcing the right behaviours of “following the rules” and “being mindful” when executing our tasks.
