Let’s Talk Safety

Let’s Talk Safety

#2 Enjoy a safe holiday – Competing demands and distractions

Think about it

  • During holidays we tend to deal with more distractions than usual.
  • Planning dinners, hosting out-of-town family members, purchasing gifts and figuring out the logistics of activities can easily cause people’s minds to
    wander when they’re at work.
  • We take on extra tasks and responsibilities at home and sometimes at work too which can lead to fatigue. We must take extra care especially when we are engaging in high-risk work.
  • When rushing or frustrated, we are more likely to slip, trip or fall, bump into others or machinery, or forget to perform small but vital tasks.
  • All it takes for a disaster is a moment of inattention. You take your eyes off the saw, and there is a finger lost. Your mind wanders to your holiday plans,
and suddenly there is contact with electricity.

Talk about it

  • How do you think managing holiday activities affects us on site, on the road or at home?

Act on it

  • Practicing mindfulness is simply staying in the present moment. It is an essential skill that helps us make better decisions to enhance safety at home and at work.
