FAQ: Extended Loadshedding

FAQ: Extended Loadshedding

Q

How will we know when it is the right time to activate our emergency preparedness plans?

A

The business continuity management (BCM) teams have developed a detailed matrix of risks and responses. The BCM teams will activate the emergency plans when it is appropriate to do so.

Q

Is Anglo American Platinum aware of the date on which Eskom will implement total power blackouts?

A

No. We must also reiterate that Eskom has not communicated any plans to implement a complete power blackout. In fact, load shedding and load curtailment have been deliberately implemented over many years to prevent a complete grid collapse. Further, Eskom continues to collaborate closely with high-intensity energy users such as Platinum to manage electricity demand.

Q

What will happen at 144 Oxford Road and our operations should Eskom inform us of its intention to implement a complete power blackout?

A

The business has been preparing for the safe ramp-down of our operations, including the closure of 144 Oxford Road, to allow adequate time to safely evacuate employees before our emergency backup power reserves are depleted.

Q

What will the closure of operations mean for us and the security of our jobs?

A

Operations will be placed on care and maintenance with the appointment of skeleton staff to maintain essential services and take care of critical equipment during the power blackout. Site teams have been working to ensure sufficient diesel, water and other resources are available to keep essential services running until Eskom is in a position to restore electricity supply through the grid. These measures are being implemented to ensure the safety of all our people and assets.

Q

What will happen to us should operations be closed and we are evacuated from work?

A

Communications during this time might be severely constrained, but the primary means of engagement with colleagues will likely be via SMS and the Engage app. Please update your contact details to make sure that you are contactable and can receive updates from us. We appreciate that extended load shedding might spark a range of fears, and we encourage you to use the handy load shedding tips we have been sharing, which are intended to keep you and your loved ones safe.

Q

How will the employees required to maintain essential and critical services be identified?

A

Each operation has identified those areas and functions regarded as critical or essential, and has determined the number of employees with the necessary skills who will be required to perform those tasks. Essential services employees have been identified and fully briefed on expectations.
