Let’s Put Waste to Work

One of the ways we are working to achieve this shared goal is by implementing a community reverse vending machine (RVM) project, administered by our Platinum business unit. As part of phase one of the project, May 2023 will see the installation of RVMs at Platinum’s head office at 144 Oxford Street, Rosebank, and at our neighbouring Global Shared Services (GSS) head office. This project is at the heart of the circular economy, which is about minimising waste in all its forms and making the most of what we have, including natural resources. It advocates re-using and recycling and ultimately turns waste into a resource. The circular economy is a key area in the healthy environment pillar of our sustainable mining plan.

Vision
Our aim is to implement this project across Platinum’s operations’ zones of in uence to help create thriving communities by building local capacity, creating sustainable livelihoods, decreasing our and our host communities’ environmental impact, and increasing people’s financial literacy.

Collaboration is key
We have partnered with Imagined Earth, a green technology and recycling infrastructure provider, and will be using their cutting edge reverse vending machines. The community RVM project is becoming a reality thanks to Circulab, an Anglo American incubator programme that encourages employees to innovate to achieve ways of working that contribute to a circular, rather than a linear economy. Circulab is funding the community RVM project as a result of the business case presented to them in 2022.
