Keeping safety front and centre

Keeping safety front and centre

Self-care: The foundation of working safely.

Think about it

  • Working safely starts with taking care of yourself, physically, mentally, and emotionally.
  • When we’re well-rested, hydrated, and mentally focused, we’re better equipped to make sound decisions, stay alert, and respond effectively to unexpected situations.
  • Fatigue, stress, and burnout can compromise our ability to follow procedures, notice hazards, or communicate clearly.

Self-care includes:

  • Getting enough sleep and rest between shifts.
  • Staying hydrated and nourished throughout the day.
  • Taking regular breaks to reset and refocus.
  • Speaking up when you’re feeling overwhelmed or unwell.
  • Supporting mental well-being through open conversations and sharing resources.

Talk about it

  • How does your personal well-being affect your ability to work safely?
  • What can we do as a team to support each other in maintaining good physical and mental health at work?

Act on it

  • Make a difference and take a moment to check in with yourself – and with a teammate.
  • Rest when you need to.
  • Speak up if you’re not feeling 100%.
  • Encourage others to take care of themselves too.
