Oxford Parks – The First Building To Receive A 6-Star

Oxford Parks building, home to our Global Shared Service (GSS) business, has achieved an unprecedented 6-star green rating across all categories: build, design, interiors, and net zero carbon Level 1.

This milestone makes it the first building in South Africa to secure this prestigious rating in every category.

At the plaque handover event held earlier today, Anglo American received the 6-star green rating from Intaprop; Oxford Parks Precinct building developer.
The Green Building Council of South Africa, awarded this to Intaprop, marking the GSS building the first to receive this accolade within its portfolio.

This achievement highlights Anglo American’s commitment to creating workspaces that not only foster innovation and wellbeing; but also minimises environmental impact.

Nolitha Fakude, Anglo American South Africa Chairperson said that the organisation is fully committed to realising its sustainability goals, and this significant milestone demonstrates it. “I’m proud that this first 6-star green rating building is home to one of our businesses. Through innovation and partnership, we can contribute meaningfully and continue to play a pivotal role in supporting a sustainable future for all.”

Darlington Phala, Head of GSS: People Services added that the company’s goal was to create a workspace that supports the wellbeing of our people while driving sustainability. “This building reflects our commitment to sustainability, innovation, and care for our colleagues.”

“We’ve worked hard to ensure that the building is not just office premises, but a model of sustainability. Our focus on cost-effective, environmentally
responsible solutions shows that sustainability can go hand in hand with operational efficiency,” commented Nadia Statham, Head of GSS: Finance Services.

Comments from GSS employees:

Urban Naidoo, Administrative Coordinator EMEA commented that “working here has been fantastic. The natural light, open spaces, and easy access to public transport make it a great place to work.”

Anati Sisilana, Mobile Supervisor Global Services, added: “The focus on sustainability is clear. From energy-saving features to thoughtfully designed public areas, it’s evident that our wellbeing was a priority in the building’s design.”

About Oxford Parks building 6-star green rating:

The Oxford Parks building is a leader in sustainable design, incorporating features that benefit both the planet and those who work in it. Three main Green Star requirements had to be met before the project commenced with demolition and construction: a Waste Management Plan (WMP), an Environmental Management Plan (EMP), and a Hazardous Waste Management Survey on existing buildings.

Natural light and external views:
We’ve maximised natural daylight and provided excellent external views to create a healthier and more enjoyable workspace.

Occupancy sensors:
Lighting control systems ensure that lights are on only when needed, helping us save energy.

Zero ozone depletion:
We’ve used materials and systems with zero ozone depletion potential to support long-term environmental health.

Water and energy efficiency:
Our water-efficient fixtures and 230 kWp solar panel system, which generates 387,000 kWh annually, help reduce our environmental footprint.

Stormwater management:
The building is designed to capture and reuse stormwater, minimising pollutants in municipal systems.
