#4 Understanding Fire Safety – Home fire safety tips

Think about it

  • Fires are preventable and it is important to reduce the likelihood of exposure to, or loss of control of, flammable or combustible substances by application of engineered and procedural controls, informed by a robust risk assessment.
  • The consequence of fire is best minimised by early detection systems – for eg. heat, smoke, vapours or flammable atmospheres – with the means to suppress any starting fire.
  • Maintaining good housekeeping minimises the accumulation of materials that can fuel a fire.
  • Maintain all life-safety devices (eg: smoke alarms) to prevent fatalities in the event of a fire.
  • Ensure sources of ignition and all flammable liquids are properly stored and kept in minimum quantities.
  • Regularly inspect electronics, electrical equipment and outlets and report defects immediately.

Talk about it

  • Are you aware of the ignition sources around you?
  • What fire hazards can you identify – at work or at home?

Act on it

  • Prevention keeps everyone safe.
  • Keep combustible materials protected and work areas tidy.
  • Make sure you understand the fire hazards around you.
