Staying Safe While Working At Heights

Staying Safe While Working At Heights

#4 Additional precautions for working at heights

Think about it

There are other precautions you can take when working at heights to help keep yourself, your family and colleagues safe, which include:

  • Making sure that walkways are free from tripping hazards.
  • Having good lighting in work areas.
  • Putting physical or hard barriers in place to prevent unauthorised access, with warning signage.
  • Using a proper working platform rather than a ladder.
  • Maintaining three points of contact at all times.
  • Having stable footing.
  • Ensuring safe access to elevated work platforms.
  • Demarcation and hard barricading of the drop zone to prevent injuries to personnel below work activities at heights.

Talk about it

  • Has it been verified that a risk analysis has been carried out for all the activities to be performed at heights?
  • Why is danger tape not an acceptable barrier to prevent entry?

Act on it

  • Conduct regular inspections of the work area, before, during and after your shift to identify new or recurring hazards and report any hazards so that risks can be managed.
