Comrades Marathon 2024

Anglo American Platinum supports colleagues taking on “the ultimate human race”.

Since 2022, Anglo American Platinum has been supporting colleagues participating in the Comrades Marathon which is run between Durban and Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal every year.

Also called “the ultimate human race”, the Comrades has recurred almost every year since 1921, with exceptions for World War II and the recent Covid-19 pandemic.

The direction of the race alternates between the “up run” of 86km starting in Durban and the “down run” of 87km starting in Pietermaritzburg. This year’s race will be an “up run” on Sunday, 9 June 2024, starting at the Durban City Hall at 05:30. Twelve hours later, the runners will have had to reach the finish line at the Hollywoodbets Scottsville Racecourse. This year will mark the 97th Comrades Marathon and the 49th “up run”.

The 2024 Comrades campaign slogan “No doubt – nakanjani” speaks of the legacy of this larger-than-life event, lauded by athletes around the globe as the ultimate road running challenge and the world’s greatest foot race. The Comrades has contributed in so many meaningful ways, to changing lives, adding purpose and enhancing the social landscape of our beautiful country.

Our journey, as Platinum, to support our colleagues participating in the Comrades has grown significantly, with other business units under the Anglo American brand joining hands to provide a financial contribution for 2024. In 2022, we had 48 participants; in 2023, we had 83 and this year we have 104.
