August is our month; we get to celebrate who we are and how far we’ve come as women in this country.

Every year, August 9 seeks to commemorate the courageous women of 1956, who fought relentlessly against challenges posted by past inequalities and injustices. Since then, the role of women has shifted significantly in positive ways that seek to address gender inequalities. The traditional roles assumed by women in the past limited their career choices but, today we have freedom of choice, as seen in the increase of females like us who are making a positive impact in the mining industry. However, today women still face various challenges in the workplace and broader society – we are still not entirely liberated from past inequalities.

Insights from our 2022 GBV diagnostic work highlighted the financial vulnerability of females as one of the causes of GBV. This suggests that, in most cases, women continue to lag financially and remain financially vulnerable.
