Global Safety 365: Activation 1 – Level 1

Global Safety 365: Activation 1 - Level 1

Global Safety last week was everything a great event should be – vibrant, interactive, engaging, educational and uplifting.

We spoke about our commitment not just to marking the day but to upholding Safety 24/7, 365 – without compromise and without excuses. The day was a hybrid event with hundreds of colleagues joining us in our physical venues and just under 1220 dialling in for the virtual stream – record numbers that set a great tone for our upholding of Safety and commitment to ourselves and to each other.

Thank you to everyone who came through for the in-person sessions and those who dialled in. We are aware not everyone received a gift pack on arrival and will be ordering more and communicating when these arrive on site.

Meanwhile, we’re happy to report that there was great engagement in terms of colleagues participating in the quiz to reveal their safety personality – Seeker, Connector or Motivator – and what that means is that it’s now time to move into Activation 1 of Level 1!

The Safety 365 activations have this year been created with a strong focus on gamification, scientifically proven to create memorable, engaging and effective learning environments. The gamification approach is designed to build employees’ skills and confidence in three simple things they need to do to stand up for safety: learn, share and challenge.

The use of gamification helps us better understand the different types of safety scenarios and the appropriate responses in those scenarios.

What will we be doing In Level 1 of Activation 1?

Level 1 involves having conversations based on a game board, with your team leader/HOD in the role of Game Master. Please take the time to get a good understanding of the game board, which explores the scenario of new equipment or a new process being introduced. There is a set of instructions for your Game Master, that give leaders tips on running the conversation and prompts to keep the discussion going.

A conversation-based team activity will follow a workplace scenario recreated as a game. Colleagues progress through the game by answering questions and having discussions, being reminded of their player types, and encountering multiple opportunities to learn, share and challenge. It’s important to note that points are awarded for participation, and not for right or wrong answers.

How long will it take us as a team?

Activation 1 in Level 1 can be covered in one 60-minute session or three 20-minute+ sessions. It must be completed by February 2023.

Do we need anything special on hand?

Have your Gameboard ready, as well as your Player Types poster to remind everyone in the team of their strengths and opportunities to improve. Also keep at hand the Learn, Share, Challenge poster that explores the key questions colleagues can ask themselves in order to stand up for safety.

Your team leader should carefully go through the Game Master guidance before the team conversations begin, so that everyone is fully prepared.

Time for an in-depth understanding of Standing up for Safety – set up time to get together with your team and kick off Level 1 today!
